Dori Dumas
Ms. Dumas serves as 1st Vice-President of the Greater New Haven Chapter of the NAACP and has been a co-chair of the Annual Freedom Fund Dinner for the past several years. She has worked on the planning committee for the branches Job Fair, College Fair and several other community forums and initiatives. Dori served as chairman of ACT-SO, a national NAACP year long program designed to recruit, stimulate, improve and encourage high academic and cultural achievement among African-American high school students. She co-chaired a community celebration in honor of former civil rights pioneer Judge Constance Banker Motley. Dori has lead and helped organize several voter registration drives throughout the city and in the local high schools. As an active member of this NAACP chapter, she has served on the front line of the important issues that threaten the civil rights of those in the community. Dori has served on the board of Connecticut State Conference of NAACP Branches for the past five years and currently serves as the Communication Chairman.
Doris J. Dumas is a native of New Haven, CT and was educated in the New Haven Public Schools System. A graduate of James Hillhouse High School, she was actively involved in many extracurricular activities. Pursuing her academic endeavors, she went on to graduate from Albertus Magnus College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business and Economics.
Since that time, “Dori”, as she is affectionately called, has become a champion of community service.
Dori has served as President of Theta Epsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She was named 2008 President of the Year for the North Atlantic Region of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Through her leadership the chapter also won several regional and local awards over her four year tenure as President. Dori has chaired many committees and held prominent offices of service. She has chaired a variety programs including Follow-Through, a mentoring program for young women and has served as a Co-Chairman of the Pink and Green Scholarship Dinner Dance. As an Assistant Graduate Advisor she was successful in mentoring Xi Omicron Chapter members with their programmatic efforts and encouraging their service to the community. Currently Dori serves as the Cluster V Coordinator over members in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island.
Dori served as Teen Advisor of the New Haven Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. She also served as the organizations parliamentarian and Vice President, where she was instrumental in planning and participating in several community activities that benefited families in the Greater New Haven area. In 2000 she received the honor and was voted as the Distinguished Mother of the Year. As a board member of The Southern Regional Sickle Cell Association, she helps with the Annual Walk-A-Thon to raise funds and awareness. These funds are raised to provide education, screening, counseling and support services to persons with Sickle Cell disease and the trait.
Her spiritual persona and beliefs keep her motivated, grounded and willing to serve. Dori was the 2003 recipient for the Citizen of the Year Award from Epsilon Iota Iota chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., she received the 2005 Community Service Award from The New Haven Club
of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs, Inc., she was a 2005 Elm – Ivy Award recipient presented by Yale University and the City of New Haven for outstanding community service, and she also received the 2005 Phenomenal Woman Award for Community Service from Eta Alpha Lambda chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and the 2006 Community Service Award from the Masonic Order of Oriental Lodge #6. In 2007 Dori was honored by the Chi Omicron Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. with their Outstanding Community Service Award. In 2009 she was honored by the NAACP Youth Council with their Excellence in Leadership Mother in the Community Award.
Dori is employed as a Clinical Practice Specialist at Yale University and is a member of Bethel AME Church. She is married to Ronald C. Dumas. They have two children, Chanelle and Ronnie. The motto she lives by and passes on to her children is a Biblical excerpt, “To whom much is given, much is required”.
