NEW HAVEN — The Greater New Haven Branch of the NAACP is calling upon all members of the community interested in job opportunities to attend its meeting tonight to hear about a proposal that would require 100 percent of applications for police, fire and other civil service jobs to come from city residents.
Branch President James E. Rawlings said the proposal that will be presented to the Civil Review Commission has the backing of the Black and Hispanic Caucus, as well as the Firebirds, a fraternal organization of black firefighters.
Rawlings said it’s not a “black, white” issue, but rather one for “economic equity” for all New Haven residents. Rawlings said such a plan is more important than ever because of the high unemployment in urban areas.
